Building Confidence and Respect: Kids Jiu-Jitsu in Bolton at Gracie Humaitá Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Courtesy and Constructive Criticism: Strengthening Kids through Jiu-Jitsu

From Professor Jason Figliano at Gracie Humaitá Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Bolton

"Every human being is entitled to courtesy and consideration. Constructive criticism is not only to be expected but sought."

– Margaret Chase Smith

At Gracie Humaitá Bolton, our Kids Jiu-Jitsu program teaches far more than submissions and escapes—it builds life skills that help children grow into confident, respectful, and resilient individuals. A critical part of that development is learning how to handle constructive criticism and use it to become stronger on and off the mats.

Why Constructive Criticism Is Essential in Jiu-Jitsu

Jiu-Jitsu is an art of constant improvement. When an instructor adjusts your child’s technique or corrects their position during a roll, the goal isn’t to point out mistakes—it’s to show them how to excel.

Learning to accept constructive feedback fosters a growth mindset. It teaches kids to approach challenges with humility, persistence, and a willingness to improve—qualities that will serve them throughout life.

Courtesy is a fundamental principle in Jiu-Jitsu. It guides how we treat our training partners, instructors, and community. At Gracie Humaitá Bolton, we emphasize courtesy in every class:

  1. Respect for Feedback: Students are taught to view corrections as opportunities to grow rather than as criticisms to avoid.
  2. Gratitude in Training: Showing appreciation to instructors and training partners fosters respect and builds a positive learning environment.
  3. Open-Mindedness: Success in Jiu-Jitsu comes from continuous learning and the willingness to adapt and improve.

Reflection for Young Martial Artists

To reinforce these lessons, we encourage our students to think about the following questions:

  1. What does being courteous to your teammates mean to you?
  2. How do you react when someone corrects your technique—do you accept it as a chance to improve?
  3. Can you recall a time when constructive feedback helped you succeed on the mats?

Jiu-Jitsu in Bolton: Building Character and Confidence

At Gracie Humaitá Bolton, we aim to do more than create skilled Jiu-Jitsu practitioners. We strive to shape respectful, confident, and resilient individuals who carry the lessons they learn on the mats into every aspect of their lives.

Through courtesy and an openness to constructive feedback, students learn the true essence of Jiu-Jitsu: growth through persistence. Every adjustment and piece of guidance is a stepping stone to becoming a better version of themselves.

If you want your child to gain these invaluable skills while staying active and engaged, our Kids Jiu-Jitsu program is the perfect place to start. Let’s work together to help your child become stronger, both on the mats and in life.

Sincerely,

Professor Jason Figliano
